Possible Essay Topic

For my essay I think I would like to write about sports and the adolescent. This topic really caught my eye because there is so much information now a days on sports and how they have developed over time. Back in the day sports were simple and no one really took them seriously. Sometimes sports were played for teens to take a break in their day and get some exercise. It is incredible to think that maybe 100 years ago baseball was played with sticks and rocks and basketball was literally played with a basket. Also, I play sports myself and can see how much it has changed from the time I startd playing basketball. Sports are a great way of entertainment and can give people outlets. They can relieve stress and take out anger. But on the other hand, teens are under so much pressure relating to sports. Competitive sports start at a very early age. There are travel teams and camps for teens and young children to perfect in the sport they want to succed in. Sometimes I question myself if it is even fun anymore. In many cases some teens would not want to go to college or even have an opportnity to go to college if it was not for playing sports. Sports can allow people to get scholarships and an opportunity to a free college education. Another reason this topic caught my eye is because in many books, television shows, and movies the males are portrayed completely different then to women. Males are seen as the macho, tough, great athletes. Girls on the other hand, are not portrayed as being the star athletes. They are the supporters of the male star athletes, like being a cheerleader and being very girly.

  1. I think this is a good topic! It's a different approach then I've been brainstorming. I've mostly been thinking of this in a sense of emotional issues and such that teens face. That's just me though. Anyways, I really like the point you made towards the end about how they depict males and females and how each gender is expected to act and activities they are expected to participate on. That will be interesting. However, I think to really make your point you will have to read a few different books in adolescent literature so you can compare and contrast. Good luck!
