My version of Charolette Temple

Nelson was flocked by women all the time but resisted the urge for he was in love with Sharon. Sharon is a goody goody and would never engage in sexual activities with Nelson because she knew her family would disprove. Her best friend Kari would always make fun of her and laugh at her because she thought Sharon was a prude. Nelson and Kari would always pick on Sharon and make her feel horrible about herself. Nelson and Kari wanted to take a trip to Las Vegas, but they could not get Sharon to go. Sharon's parents told her to stay away from Las Vegas because it was the city full of sins! One Friday night Sharon and Kari go to this party to meet Nelson. Kari kept giving her drinks and making her drink them fast. Sharon did'nt exactly know what she was drinking but she knew she was feeling good. The next morning Sharon wakes up in a motel in a place she is not familiar. She looks out the window and sees a sign flashing, "WELCOME TO VEGAS!" She immediatly starts freaking out and reaches for her cell phone. The only problem was her cell phone was dead. There is a loud bang on the door and Sharon answers it, it's Nelson!! Sharon starts feeling better but wants answers. The last thing she remebered was dancing at the party. Nelson tells her that him and Kari had taken her for a trip to experience what real partying is. He then goes on to tell her that they had a great time (wink wink). Sharon is still confused and wants to know where Kari is. Nelson tells her that she went home with a guy she met at the club. Nelson continues with stories from the night and tells Sharon that they had eloped. Sharon starts crying. She is disgusted with herself. All she can think about is what will her parents think and if they are searching for her. Nelson tells Sharon to pipe down because they aren't ever going back home. She is stuck in Vegas with him!
Months have gone by and Sharon still has not heard from her family. She is so depressed and has noticed she has been feeling ill. Nelson jokes around with her about being pregnant, but to Sharon that is not a joke. She went to the drug store and took a pregnancy test. The test showed up positive!! Sharon is shocked!! She goes and tells Nelson, but before she could finish tleling him the news, Nelson ran out the door. Nelson was never heard of or seen again.

Charolette Temple

In the beginning of the book I was a little confused with all the different characters and their different names, but as I kept reading it all made sense. I kind of liked the book actually. It was a little hard to adjust to at first with the different writing and the old english language, but it was decent. I really liked how in some chapters Rowson would talk to her readers. While reading the second half of the book, I started feeling very sorry for Charolette. It seemed like everyone was out to get her. Montraville was a coward and a snake in my opinion. He led poo Charolette to believe that he loved her and would take care of her, and then he falls in love with Miss Julia Franklin. It made me mad reading about how awful he treated Charolette. He just left her with nothing. How could anyone do that to another person and be able to go on with their day? It didn't seem like he cared at all if he was able to go out and fall in love with Julia. It really made me mad when he left Charolette all alone carrying his child. He didn't even want anything to do with his child. This just goes to show how men can be cowards when the make mistakes. Even though this book was written a long time ago, the things that happened and the way people behave still happen today. For example, girls running away with their lovers, guys knocking up their girlfriends and then abandoning them and the list can keep going. When Montraville thought he caught Charolette cheating on him with Belcour, I think it was just giving Montraville an easy way out of the relationship. I think that he knew that Charolette didn't cheat, Charolette was portrayed in the book as a nice, sweet girl who never wants to cause any harm to anyone. I was really glad when Charolette's parents were happy to hear from their daughter though. It showed that they really did care about their daughter and truely loved her. It was good to read that they were willing to move on and welcome Charolette home.

Possible Essay Topic

For my essay I think I would like to write about sports and the adolescent. This topic really caught my eye because there is so much information now a days on sports and how they have developed over time. Back in the day sports were simple and no one really took them seriously. Sometimes sports were played for teens to take a break in their day and get some exercise. It is incredible to think that maybe 100 years ago baseball was played with sticks and rocks and basketball was literally played with a basket. Also, I play sports myself and can see how much it has changed from the time I startd playing basketball. Sports are a great way of entertainment and can give people outlets. They can relieve stress and take out anger. But on the other hand, teens are under so much pressure relating to sports. Competitive sports start at a very early age. There are travel teams and camps for teens and young children to perfect in the sport they want to succed in. Sometimes I question myself if it is even fun anymore. In many cases some teens would not want to go to college or even have an opportnity to go to college if it was not for playing sports. Sports can allow people to get scholarships and an opportunity to a free college education. Another reason this topic caught my eye is because in many books, television shows, and movies the males are portrayed completely different then to women. Males are seen as the macho, tough, great athletes. Girls on the other hand, are not portrayed as being the star athletes. They are the supporters of the male star athletes, like being a cheerleader and being very girly.

History of American Teenager

While I was reading The Rise and Fall of the American Teenager, I noticed that it was very hard for me to keep focused and interested in the book. It took me until the second part of the reading assignment to find something interesting. In the chapter called Dancing Daughters Hine started discussing laws that regulated sexual activity. I found this to be extremely interesting because back in the early 1900's and late 1800's the age of consentual sex for young girls in most states were between the ages of 10 and 12 years. I found this to be disgusting because older men were preying on young girls. Those girls are still considered to be children and have no experience in any sexual activity and no right to be doing those things. Hines had mentioned that the teenage pregnancy rate went up as well. When the children are born there is probably going to be a lot of conflict. The fact that the age difference is so significant in some situations, the baby is going to be raised in an unbalanced household. The girls who supposedly wanted the sex and consented to it is not believable. I think that some of them were too afraid to actually say anything because they were afraid to upset anyone. Also, there was such a fight and struggle to raise the age in most states.
Another thing I found to be very interesting was the term "petting". I have never heard of that term until I read this book. I think that it is weird that teenage girls and boys would get together and do all kinds fo sexual activity except for intercourse. Hines said that by petting the teenagers during that time were less likely to have sex especially those teens who were educated. According to the text the more educated you were the less likely you were to have intercourse and the least amount of education you had the more likely you were to have intercourse. I find those statistics to be ridiculous. No matter how educated teens are they are still going to want to experiment. I do not think education has anything to do with that. The teenagers during that time even had petting parties which is involving more than one couple in the same place doing sexual things. Now a days that is not common. I have never heard of or been to a petting party. Now a days kids have sex earlier and ealier. They jsut skip all the fore play. I think that kids are starting ealrier because they are not being educated of all the scary things that could happen. Schools basically just teach abstinence and it does'nt seem to be doing a great job or making an effect. Kids should be scared out of their minds not to have sex. When I was in high school my teachers literally scared me and my classmates so bad. They would show disgusting videos and tell us all the bad things that could happen.
